Jamini Roy signature

Jamini Roy died in 1972 at the age of eighty five. Which prompted my next query; I ask if he was aware that Roy had fetched very handsome prices in the international auctions recently?

Signature considered genuine. Yet, it was not exactly in the twenties that Jamini Roy had arrived at the threshold of his signature style.

He is also recognised as one of the country’s nine National Treasures (as per a rule passed in 1972 under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act) which forbids the sale of his work outside India. Jamini Roy was a simple person and led a non-materialistic lifestyle.

This page was last edited on 2 July 2019, at 07:45. Roy was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955, and Indira Gandhi (among the admirers of his work, as was Mahatma Gandhi) declared him a national artist. 3 URL / Share.

A recipient of the Padma Bhushan (1955), he was posthumously honoured with a commemorative stamp by India Post in 1978. He began his career by painting in the Post-Impressionist genre of landscapes and portraits, very much in keeping with his training in a British academic system. Died 1972.
